Josh Berry: This short informative film on the "accidental sea" was kind of insightful. I had no idea that there was a huge body of water out in the deserts of California. The scenery was creepy, but yet beautiful at the same time. It looks like a post-nuclear war town. It's also crazy that the old man, in my opinion, wasted decades of his life painting that mural.
I've seen pictures of this before on the internet, this was a great way of telling the story of the sea. It was very creepy-- end of the world style. And then finding the hidden jewel in the hell that's left over, what a great short!
Jason: That was one of the most depressing things i've ever seen in my life! I had to watch this on my phone so I couldn't really grasp the visaul clarity! but it was an interesting story none the less!
Andy Barksdale: I really liked the way that the combination of the landscapes and camera movement made the sea seem really otherworldly, which amplified the narration at the beginning about "going to another world". And I thought that the landscapes and outdoor lighting were really nice looking. I also thought that the incorporation of the older footage helped hammer home the idea of what that place was and what it has become. It was a really well-done, nice looking and informative short.
The opening shots are just amazing in themselves and they are nice smooth shots. I love the music as well in the beginning with the voice-over, it really draws you in and it is a pretty cool topic to cover. I would kill to go there and shoot something myself, finding out the past stories of these places is intriguing to me. I am glad that they were able to mix in old footage of the place to help show what it was like and not just talk about it because seeing it made it even more dramatic. Then comes the story change that was unexpected and an amazing side story that really made the film come together making the contrast of life and death.
Jefferson Fabian: I really enjoyed this and thought it was very well-made, but I think when you stumble upon a location like this, the film makes itself. There is lots of great ominous, surreal photography of the exotic setting, and the narration and sound aided in establishing an eerie atmosphere. I'd be willing to bet that there's still a trove of pretty shots that they're still sitting on that they couldn't cram into a 6-minute film. I know I'd go nuts with the camera over there. Also, I really liked the telling of the sea's story. It definitely added more to the images we were seeing.
This is definitely one of the most interesting films so far, because it was so visually dynamic. I enjoyed all the different shots showing the wasteland that has been left behind. This film is an example of how the setting can dictate the story. There was very good coordination of the narration with interesting shots that went with what the author was saying. I especially liked the ending where it is left up to the viewer to decide if it was a good or bad thing, and forces us to think about if that will ever happen to our town.

ReplyDeleteNot very much more to say than that it was interesting and informative. Kind of creepy, too. Not my favorite.
