Short of the Week: Plastic Bag Ramin Bahrani

  1. Megan Dillard: I'm not gonna lie, it was very cheesy to me. I think it was mostly because of the voice of the plastic bag. Perhaps if the voice hadn't felt so silly, it would have been the deepest thing I've ever seen. I will say that the shots were beautiful. There were a few shots with very narrow focus that followed the plastic bag, for instance the one where the bag is floating down the train tracks. I really just wish there would have been a different voice actor so maybe I could have enjoyed it more.

I always try and find the negative aspects of films before the positive because I feel like the positives can be quite obvious. I can honestly say that I don't have any negative things to say about this film. In actuality, this is one of my favorite shorts that I've seen thus far in this class. I like films that make you think, and that don't have a predictable outcome. This idea was very creative. I feel like the voice of the bag was perfect for the setting of the film. I feel like the producer did not want to give the bag a "normal" voice because the bag is not human. The robotic/monotone voice gives off a sense of lifelessness. I watched it twice, and tried to come up with a philosophical meaning behind everything. I came up with many that I don't feel like typing up at this moment. Aside from the story-line, I felt that the camerawork, and the shots were amazing. My favorite shot would have to be around 9:00 where there was a reflection of the bag coming out of the window in the water.

This is one of the most enjoyable shorts of those that we've seen so far. It's got an interesting concept, nice visuals, and a statement that the director hopes to make about the environment. However, like in most things that Herzog narrates, he steals the show. This wouldn't have packed as much of a punch without Herzog's odd, ominous voice delivering the lines. He added a human dimension to an inanimate object. The environmental theme of the film wasn't as pervasive as I thought it would be, only becoming fully apparent with the bag's last line, which is fine because it's not an altogether grand statement anyway.

I thought this movie was interesting. they did a great job of making the audience feel actual feelings for this plastic bag as it goes on its journey to the sea. the director uses visual imagery to tell the story even better than the narration ever could in my opinion. If you watch the movie over without the sound you can almost get the same feelings of wondering where the wind will take the bag next. I could have sworn the narration was done by Microsoft sam, but it made the bag seem lees human, as if the voice was just as in animate as the bag itself. It was a great movie and very well done.

  5. I didn't fiind this film enjoyable what so ever! Ifaded in and out throughout the whole thing! Thegrzphic at the end were kind of nice, but the story line was quite boring. Definitly my least favorive so far in this course!

  6. I thought this film was a creative idea however overall it wasn't very interesting. What I found most interesting was trying to figure out how they shot everything. I know they probably had to get very creative when filming in order to make the bag look alive, which I think they did a good job of. I feel like they could've done a better job telling the story in less time. The film seemed to drag on a bit.

  7. Well unlike most of the previous comments, I thought this film deserved its award as short of the year. To try to take an inanimate object and make your audience develop feelings for it while having dual meanings to the story is absolutely brilliant! I can imagine shooting most of this required quite a bit of patience and thought to make capture the bag doing what they wanted it to. The underwater shots, or mostly aquarium shots from the looks of it, were very well done and also the main subject of the environmental aspect of the story. To be able to think up of this story is one thing but to actually pull it off in a way that entertains people while "educating" them is astonishing. I cannot imagine trying to explain this story idea to other people and not get weird looks without actually being able to show them but I am glad they did make it.
